Breeding better mangoes

Our plant breeders and scientists have worked on improving the genetics of Queensland mangoes for more than 60 years, supplying varieties that support the $208 million Australian industry.

Our varieties include:

  • R2E2, a major export variety for over 40 years
  • Calypso, makes up 25% of Australian production
  • Yess!, Ah-ha! and Now!, recently released varieties with new flavours and extended production seasons.

Mango breeding

Our mango breeding program focuses on developing varieties with improved profitability and consumer appeal. This includes varieties with:

  • high-yields
  • improved farm and orchard productivity
  • disease resistance for lower pesticide use
  • greater fruit quality, including fruit colour, shape, size and taste.

Consumer and sensory science

Our consumer and sensory scientists work closely with our breeding teams to ensure new varieties meet consumer demand.

Consumer research is used to evaluate mango varieties and develop a sensory profile including information around key attributes of:

  • appearance
  • aroma
  • flavour
  • texture.

The breeding team uses this information and insights to pick the best genetics and develop mangoes Queenslanders love to eat and growers love to grow.
